What does a scan result look like?
Every report opens with one of two verdicts. How do I read a finding?
Every finding in the report carries the same four fields. Using the first sample finding above as the example:
Severity
Attention means the line deserves a closer look, like a rate that differs from the published table. Info marks smaller observations, like a two-cent sum inconsistency, worth knowing about but rarely worth a phone call.
Line item
Which charge was flagged and why, in one line: here, an energy surcharge whose rate does not match the published table. Named findings mean you never have to guess which of the twelve lines on the invoice the report is talking about.
Dollar amount
The amount involved in the flagged change: here, $14.72, the difference between what the sample invoice charged at 18.5% and what the published 16.2% rate would have produced. It tells you how much is at stake before you spend time on it.
Evidence
What was compared and what did not match: “Charged 18.5%, published table shows 16.2% for the week of 2026-05-12.” The evidence line names both numbers and the period, so you can verify the comparison yourself against the hauler's published table.
What do I do with a finding?
First, check your service agreement: negotiated rates can override published tables, so a difference is not automatically an error. If the change has no basis you can find, the evidence line converts directly into a question your hauler has to answer specifically. For the surcharge finding above, that question is:
“What index period and rate table produced the 18.5% energy surcharge on this invoice? The published table shows 16.2% for that week.”
A question like that names the line, the rate, and the period, so it cannot be answered with a form letter. It gets further than a general complaint about the total, and it works whether the answer turns out to be a billing correction or a negotiated rate you had forgotten about.
